Named for a cult Stock, Aitken & Waterman hit (and yes, they
do have cult hits),
I'd Rather Jack is a show that's heavy on pop-culture and light on coolsie gnashing of teeth. Originally,
I’d Rather Jack was belted out to lament the stagnant state of the UK’s Top 40 and hit radio. Now, the title stands as a call to arms for those who want to know what’s happening in the world of pop/unpopular culture, modern life and celebrity – and who don’t want to be made to feel guilty for doing so by the indie cognoscenti.
Hosted by Clem Bastow and Jess McGuire,
I’d Rather Jack looks at everything from awards nights, to relationship issues as demonstrated by Famous People, to Serious Cultural Debate (where necessary), and everything in between. In the midst of this chatter, Clem and Jess furnish listeners with eclectic pop (and unpopular) gems from the Brill Building to Brecht to Britney and back again. They are joined by rotating ‘experts’ on the topics of fashion, pop news and blues, and film and TV gossip. They will talk to songwriters and producers in an effort to get inside the crystalline world of pure pop.
The second half of the show is dedicated to what Clem and Jess do best - counting down a Top Ten (past topics have included The Top Ten Stupidest Songs About Sex and The Top Ten Camping Anthems) and making wildly inappropriate single-entendres in between songs.
I’d Rather Jack is for the dedicated pop jackdaw and the curious passerby alike. Remember, when it comes to pop, it’s society’s crime, not ours.
